First Friday Lunch and Learn- The Horn Island Logs of Walter Anderson

Join us for First Friday Lunch and Learn, a series of pre-recorded Mississippi Department of Archives and History  discussions about current and historical Mississippi events and culture. Participants are invited to bring their lunch to enjoy while learning! The Library will provide water and a light dessert.

Walter Anderson's paintings, drawings, murals, block prints, sculpture, carvings, and writings of coastal plants, animals, landscapes, and people have placed in among the most compelling and singular artists of the 20th century. Heralded as a major American watercolorist, this reclusive Mississippi artist made periodic sojourns to an undisturbed barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico where he observed and experienced the mysteries of nature.

In Horn Island Logs Anderson’s visionary drawings and watercolors of plants and wildlife enhance his narrative of his solitary time on Horn Island. From his reflections made over a period of twenty years, one discovers the secrets of a fragile and changing ecology and marvels at Anderson’s exotic vision.
